Helen E. Bales, 93, died May 5, 2011, in Vancouver, Washington. She was born August, 22, 1917 in Bemidji, MN. Bales resided in Vancouver for 20 years and in Ridgefield for 45 years.
Bales was a member of Martha Washington Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading baseball, class reunions and gardening. She worked as a housewife, raising two daughters and a son, and also worked at Woolworth's for several years. Bales was also a 4-H club leader and a Rainbow Mother Adviser.
Bales was preceded in death by her husband, Vance Bales, in 1999 and her brother, Ken Hinshaw in 1999. She is survived by her daughters Dorothy E. stow [sic] of Federal Way, WA, and Nancy L. Swann of Vancouver, WA; son David O. Bales of Klamath Falls, OR; and loyal friend, Dough Allinger of Ridgefield, Washington. She also had five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Viewing was on Thursday May 12 and Friday, may 13, 2011 at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. A graveside service was held for Bales Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 1101 NE 112th Ave, Vancouver, WA.

Helen Bales of Vancouver, WA, passed away on May 5, 2011. She was born to Dave and Verna Hinshaw on Aug. 22, 1917 in Bemidji, MN. She graduated from the original Vancouver High School in 1936 and chaired many reunions over the years. She worked at Woolworth's for several years. Helen was a 4-H club leader and a Rainbow Mother Advisor. She was an avid reader, a letter writer, and a music lover. She enjoyed playing pinochle and watching sports, especially baseball. Helen was a great gardener, growing both vegetables and flowers. She was an excellent cook and hostess. Helen was an Eastern Star and her husband Vance was a Mason. They attended Cascades Presbyterian Church. They enjoyed traveling in their RV throughout the U.S. The family thanks the staff and friends at Vancouver Rehab for their loving care of Helen. She was the beloved mother of Dorothy (Jim) Stow of Federal Way, WA, Nancy (Dan) Swann of Vancouver, WA, and David (Judy) Bales of Klamath Falls, OR. She was blessed with five granddaughters, Lynn, Loriann, Katherine, Mary and Lydia; and twin great-grandsons, Lucas and Oliver. She will be missed by dear sister-in-law, Mary DeLashmutt; special cousin, Marie Nelson; and loyal friend, Doug Allinger. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vance Bales and brother, Ken Hinshaw. Viewing will be noon to 9:00 p.m, Thurs, May 12 and 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m, Fri, May 13. There will be a graveside service at 12:30 p.m, Sat, May 14 with a light lunch to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for children.
