Born Apr 27 18937,8,9,11,13,14,15,16 [Apr 29 18931, about 18954], Lynn, Randolph County, Indiana7,8,9,11,13,14,15,16.  

On Jun 5 1917 Herschel Creed Hinshaw, age 24, registered for the World War I draft in Randolph County, Indiana.  He declared he was born April 27 1893 in Lynn, Indiana, and was then still residing in Lynn where he was single and a farm laborer employed by Lon Thompson of Wayne County, Indiana.  He was recorded as medium height, medium build, gray eyes, brown hair.8  

Herschel was shown in the 1920 census (Jan 1920), living (or staying) with his cousins (and future wife and her sister) on South D Street, Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana:16

Stempel, Mildred M., head-of-household, age 22, born in Indiana; father born in Indiana; mother born in Missouri; widow; rented home; occupation: nurse, general practice.
Outland, Blanch A., sister, age 20, born in Indiana; father born in Indiana; mother born in Missouri; divorced; occupation: bookkeeper, automobile agency.
Hinshaw, Herschel C. [initial unclear], cousin, age 26, born in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; divorced; occupation: farmer, general farming.

He married Mildred Stempel14,15 [Mildred Outland1,7, Mary M. Outland4,17], Jan 19 192014,15, Wayne County, Indiana14,15.  Mildred, daughter of Henry L. Outland & Leona Brown Hinshaw1,14,16,17,18, was born Apr 29 18971,14,16,17,18 [about 18994], Blackford County, Indiana1,14,16,17,18.  

Herschel and Mildred were first cousins once removed.  

Note that the 1920 census (above) seems to indicate that both Herschel and Mildred had been previously married16 (Mildred to a -- Stempel; Herschel uncertain).  

At Cherry Grove MM on 6-12-1920, Herschel was granted a certificate to Whitewater MM.10  

At Whitewater MM on 7-15-1920, "Herschal" was received on a certificate from Cherry Grove MM.  On 8-19-1920, "Mrs. Herschel" was received on a letter from Grace Methodist Church.1  

At Whitewater MM on 1-19-1922, Herschel & Mildred and child Henry Herschel were granted a letter to First Methodist Church, Lynn, Indiana.1  

Herschel and family were shown in the 1930 census (Apr 18 1930), Connersville Township, Fayette County, Indiana:4

Hinshaw, Mary M., wife, age 31, born in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; first married at age 20.
Hinshaw, Henry H., son, age 9, born in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; attended school.
Hinshaw, Glenna M., daughter, age 7, born in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; attended school.
Ray, Wilburn, boarder, age 25, born in Ohio; parents born in Ohio; single; occupation: laborer, country club; not a war veteran.

On Apr 27 1942 Herschel Creed Hinshaw, age 49, registered for the World War II draft in Liberty, Union County, Indiana.  He declared he was born 4-27-1893 in Lynn, Indiana, and was then residing on E. Union St., Liberty, Indiana, employed by J.A. Burlch and Son of Liberty.  He declared his relative/contact was Miss Glenna Mae Hinshaw of 520 North School, Greenfield, Indiana.  He was recorded as 5'6" tall, 149 lbs., brown eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion.9  

He then married Marcia K. Brumfiel.19  Marcia, daughter of Clayton Brumfiel & Ethel Atkinson, was born Oct 22 1915, Wayne County, Indiana.11,19  

Herschel Cread Hinshaw died Jun 2 1958, Veterans Administration Medical Center, Montgomery County, Ohio; age 65.7,11,20,21  

Marcia died Jan 4 2007, Rose Gate Village, Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana; age 91.11,19

Marcia Hinshaw

Marcia K. Hinshaw, age 91, of Richmond, died Thursday morning (January 4, 2007) at Rose Gate Village.  She was born in Wayne County on October 22, 1915 to Clayton and Ethel Atkinson Brumfiel and had lived here all of her life.  She was a retired employee of the housekeeping department at Earlham College and was a member of First Christian Church.  Her husband, Herschel Hinshaw, died in 1958

Survivors include her step-daughter -- Glenna May Flatter of Greenfield, Indiana;

Step-son -- Henry Hinshaw of Miamisburg, Ohio;

Cousin -- Bruce Peery of Dayton Beach, Florida,

Several step-grandchildren.  

Public graveside services will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday (January 8, 2007) in Webster Cemetery.  Rev. Royce Willerton will officiate.  There will be no public calling.  Riggle - Waltermann Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.  www.riggle-waltermann.com
