Bessie and Joseph were first cousins once removed (through Bessie's grandmother, Patsey N. Henshaw), and also second cousins once removed (through Bessie's grandfather, Richard T. Early).    Note that Bessie's sister Nina Jane Early married Joseph's brother Edmund Henshaw.
