Born about 1789, Surry County, North Carolina.4
He married Phebe Vestal5,6,7 [Phoebe A. Vestal8], Mar 20 18165,6,7, Surry County, North Carolina5,6,7. A marriage bond was recorded for Eli Hinshaw & Phebe Vestal on Mar 20, 1816, Surry County, North Carolina.6
Phebe, daughter of Jesse Vestal & Martha Cassady, was born Jan 9 1801, Surry County, North Carolina.9,10,11
Eli moved to Franklin County, Tennessee in 1830.4
Eli and family were shown in the 1830 census, Franklin County, Tennessee:12
Eli Henshaw household:
1 male age 30-40 [Eli].
2 females under age 5.
1 female age 20-30 [Phebe].
no slaves.
6 persons total in household.
Eli and family were shown in the 1840 census, Panola County, Mississippi:13
Eli Henshaw household: [indexed as "Henskow"]:
1 male age 40-50 [Eli].
3 females age 10-15.
1 female age 30-40 [Phebe].
1 female age 50-60.
no slaves.
7 persons total in household.
2 persons engaged in agriculture.
Living next door in 1840 was the family of a William Vestal.13
Eli was shown in the 1841 Mississippi state census, Panola County, Mississippi:14
Eli Hinshaw household: 2 free white males; 4 free white females.
Note: the children shown are uncertain. From the letters of Betsy Hinshaw Pippin it can be established that the above children were siblings, but their connection to Eli & Phebe as their parents is less certain. The only "source" making this connection is from the "LDS Pedigree Resource File", which shows Betsy Hinshaw Pippin was a daughter of Eli & Phebe3 (but the "LDS Pedigree Resource File" is just a collection of user submissions and therefore is far from strong evidence). There is some speculation that the above children might instead be children of Jesse Hinshaw #134.15 Note: The death certificate for John A. Hinshaw #10174 does indeed show his father was a Jesse Hinshaw/Henshaw.
