During World War II Melvin served in the U.S. Navy, working as a spot welder.  He later advanced to become a supply seargant.1,9  

He married Lois Jean Bensley, May 11 1950, Full Gospel Tabernacle, 1900 Oberlin Ave., Lorain, Lorain County, Ohio.1,7,10,11  Lois, daughter of John + Fannie Bensley, was born Jan 26 1933, Ohio.8,11,12,13  

Melvin & Lois' marriage was reported in the "Chronicle Telegram" (Elyria, Ohio) on Friday, May 12, 195010 (see scan below).  

Melvin and family were shown in the 1954 city directory of Connorsville, Indiana:14

Lois died May 28 1990.11  (incorrectly shown as May 15 1990 in the SSDI).8  

In 1996 Melvin was living in Connersville, Fayette County, Indiana.1  

In 2003 Melvin was living in North Vernon, Indiana.11  

Melvin Harland Hinshaw died Jan 21 2010, Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana; age 83.7,8,11,15,16

Melvin Harland Hinshaw, Sr., 83 of North Vernon, formely of Indiana Lakes, passed away Thurday, Jan. 21 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.  

Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25 at Meyers Funeral Home in Batesville.  Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at the funeral home, with Chaplain Walter Glover officiating.  Burial will be in St. John (Huntersville) Cemetery with military graveside rites.  Memorials are suggested to the Decatur County Hospice.

Melvin Harland Hinshaw Sr., age 83 years of North Vernon, IN formerly of Indian Lakes passed away Thursday, January 21, 2010 in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN.  

Born January 2, 1927 in Boone Co, IN he was the son of the late Glen & Edith (Spray) Hinshaw.  He worked in Connersville, IN at the Design & Manufacturing Co.  Mr. Hinshaw was a WWII Navy Veteran then went into the Army before going back into the Navy and finally the Indiana National Guard.  He retired after 30 years of service.  He was a member of the American Legion.  Mr. Hinshaw married Lois Jean Bensley in May 1950.  

Melvin is survived by his sons Melvin Hinshaw Jr. of Connersville, IN and John Hinshaw of New Albany, IN; daughters Edith Hampton of Brownsville, IN & Margaret Ritter of Connersville, IN; brother Marvin Hinshaw of Clearwater, FL & sister Virginia Cottongin of Kinder, LA He will also be missed by several grandchildren & great grandchildren.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Lois Jean Hinshaw, a daughter that died at birth and brothers Bill Hinshaw & Harold Hinshaw.  

Visitation will be Monday, January 25, 2010 from 4-8pm at Meyers Funeral Home, Batesville, IN.  Funeral Services will be Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at 2PM at Meyers Funeral Home, with Chaplain Walter Glover officiating.  Burial will be in St. John (Huntersville) Cemetery with military graveside rites.  Memorials are suggested to Decatur Co. Hospice.
