Virgil was night editor with the Bloomington (Illinois) Daily Pantagraph,4,5,6 where his future cousin-in-law Martha Cooper also worked; Virgil was responsible for introducing Martha to his cousin Maurice, and they were subsequently married.4
Virgil had "club feet" - Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) - as did his brother Don.14,15 The club feet came from his mother's side, where all of her brothers had it.

Helen E. Hinshaw, 93, of Ramsey died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015, at 6:25 a.m. at Piatt County Nursing Home in Monticello.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Rodney Blomquist officiating.
Burial will be in Ramsey Cemetery in Ramsey with military honors conducted by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post #95 in Vandalia.
Mrs. Hinshaw was born on Oct. 9, 1921, in Ramsey, the daughter of the late Dale and Noy (Casey) Hauskins. She married E. Virgil Hinshaw on Feb. 5, 1949, in Henderson, KY, and he preceded her in death on July 28, 1988.
She served in the United States Navy as a nurse.
Mrs. Hinshaw is survived by her sons, Thomas Hinshaw of Ramsey and Samuel Hinshaw of Bement; grandchildren, Hypashia Hinshaw, Blake Hinshaw and Aden Hinshaw; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
