Marcelline Mary Barry "Marce" Hinshaw Marcelline "Marce" Mary Barry Hinshaw 81, Lincoln, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009. Marce was born 6/15/1928 in Minneapolis, Minn. She grew up in Glendale, Calif. She attended St. Catherine's College (St. Paul, Minn.), UCLA, and Occidental College (Eagle Rock, Calif.). She taught English and Latin at Arcadia High School and did volunteer work in Europe for 17 months in the post WW II years rebuilding communities. Through her volunteer work in Europe Marce became involved with the American Friends Service Committee.
After her marriage in 1955 she did substitute teaching until her first child was born. She stayed home with her children for 11 years during which time she received her Master's Degree from the University of Nebraska. She taught for 24 years in Lincoln at both Dawes and Robin Mickle middle schools. Marce was a gifted teacher who was wonderfully creative in her teaching style. She had a passion for literature and sports. She was the "sparkplug" of her softball team as a youth and champion of several Lincoln Parks and Rec Tennis leagues. She was active in the Lincoln (Quaker) Friend's Meeting for over 50 years. Marce will be remembered for her indefatigable spirit, love of teaching and the written word, heartwarming smile and desire to serve not only her family and her community but all of human kind.
Marcelline's memory will be forever cherished by her family including her husband of 53 years and lifelong companion Harvey Loy Hinshaw; her children, Anne Hinshaw Stephen and husband, David, of Duluth, Minn., and Thomas Hinshaw of Alameda, Calif.; grandchildren, Katherine and Patrick Stephen; and brothers, David, Gerald and Bruce Barry. Marcelline was preceded in death by her oldest son, Harvey Loy Hinshaw Jr. (Chip).
Her family requests in lieu of flowers her friends make a donation to either the Alliance for the Mentally Ill or the Lincoln Friends Meeting. Hinshaw, Harvey Loy Sr. Harvey Loy Hinshaw Sr., 86, Lincoln, died Saturday March 10th, 2012. Harvey was born June 11, 1925 in Pasadena, Calif. He was one of six accomplished sons of Virgil and Natella Loy Hinshaw. He attended Occidental College (Eagle Rock, Calif.), and earned his Master of music degree at USC. He also studied at Juilliard. He travelled as accompanist for singers John Charles Thomas and Igor Gorin. He became a member of the faculty of the Dept of Music at UNL in 1956 where he was a professor until his retirement in 1989. He taught keyboard instruments (piano and harpsichord), introducing a harpsichord program to UNL. As a pianist he devoted special attention to the works of Charles Ives, performing the two Ives Sonatas, at Alice Tully Hall in NY and making telecasts on Ives for NETV that were broadcast nationally. He has recorded a CD of Ives First Piano Sonata with Coronet Recording Company. Harvey met his wife Marcelline Hinshaw at Occidental College. Prior to marriage they worked together in Europe with the American Friends Service committee after WWII. They were married in Dec. 1955 and moved to Lincoln in 1957.
Harvey was an ardent pacifist and an active member of the Lincoln Friends (Quaker) Meeting for over 50 years. His favorite pastimes were always outdoors and involved swimming and sunning on the rocks by secluded mountain rivers.
His memory will forever be cherished by his children, Anne Hinshaw Stephen (Duluth, Minn.) and her husband David Stephen, and Thomas Virgil Hinshaw (Alameda, Calif.); grandchildren, Katherine and Patrick Stephen; his brother, Paul Hinshaw (Fullerton, Calif.). Harvey was preceded in death by his wife, Marcelline & eldest son, Chip.
His family requests in lieu of flowers his friends make a donation to either the United Nations Association of the USA or the Lincoln Friends Meeting.
