Soon after their last son (William Banks) was born, the family moved to Randleman to be near better schools, first renting a home on the Randleman side of Deep River and eventually moving across the river into a large house owned by Louisa's older sister Eunice. They later purchased a portion of the farm on Polecat Creek that had been owned by Joseph's father James Madison Hinshaw and his grandfather Jesse Gifford Hinshaw, and they moved into the old family homestead on the farm.1
