In 1920 Clyde (with his widowed father and sisters)14 had been living next door to Edith's aunt Harriet;25 Edith and Clyde probably met somehow through that connection.26
On Jun 5 1917 Clyde Printus Wiser, age 29, had registered for the World War I draft in Gridley, Butte County, California. He declared he was born April 7th 1888 in Manly, Iowa, and was then residing in (or near) Gridley, California, single, a self-employed farmer, with a dependent father. He claimed an exemption due to "Physical Disability". He was recorded as medium height, stout, blue eyes, brown hair.11

He declared he was born April 7 1888 in Mamlay [sic], Iowa, and was then residing in Manzanita District, Gridley, Butte County, California, a self-employed fruit rancher. He declared his relative/contact was Mrs. Edith Wiser of the same address. He was recorded as 5'8" tall, 175 lbs., blue eyes, gray hair, ruddy complexion.15
