Born Feb 23 1886, Pond Grove (now Valley Rd. off Reynolda Rd.), Forsyth County, North Carolina.1,2,4,5,6,7
Clinton dropped out of high school (as did his sister Bertha and brother Hugh), but he later attended Salem Boys School (1905-1906 and part of 1907). In 1907 he attended A&M College (now North Carolina State University), where he was President of the freshman class. After two years at A&M he became ill and had to drop out, and didn't return.8
When Clinton's parents fell on hard times, his brother Fred travelled seeking work, which he found in Charleston, West Virginia. Fred wrote home telling his parents of his good fortune (no need to build a fire in the morning - just turn the gas valve!). Clinton and his father William and brother Hugh went to Charleston to find work. Eventually William returned to Winston, Fred moved north, and Clinton settled in Huntington, West Virginia.1
Clinton worked for the American Car Foundry (which built coal cars), where he became liason officer to another plant located in Jeffersonville, Indiana, where he met his future wife, Edith Marie Burns.1
He married Edith Marie Burns1,2,4,5,9 [Marie Burns4,8,10], Jun 11 19131,2,4,5,9, Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana1,2,4,5,9. Edith, daughter of James Burns & Sarah Elizabeth Cecil, was born Sep 11 1894, Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana.1,4,10,11
Clinton and Edith took a steamer up the Ohio River to honeymoon in Cincinnati, Ohio.1
Clinton later became a draftsman with West Virginia Rail Mill. He eventually became self-employed as a food distributor for Helman's (mayonaise) and Kraft (cheese). He did well - even during the depths of the Depression he earned $8,000 and was able to loan money to his family in Winston-Salem, N.C.1
On Sep 12 1918 Clinton White Hinshaw, age 32, registered for the World War I draft in Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia. He declared he was born Feb 23 1886, and was then residing at 320 Norway Ave., Huntington, where he was an engineering draftsman employed by West Virginia Rail Mill. He declared his nearest relative was his wife, Marie Hinshaw, of the same address. He was recorded as tall, slender, blue eyes, brown hair, with "left index finger off".6
Clinton and family were shown in the 1920 census (Jan 6 1920), 320 Norway Ave., Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia:12
Clinton and family were again shown in the 1930 census (Apr 12 1930), 320 Norway Ave., Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia:13
Clinton White Hinshaw died Jul 23 1956, Huntington, West Virginia.1
Edith died Aug 25 1989, Proctorville, Lawrence County, Ohio; buried Huntington, West Virginia.1
