Born Jul 29 19101,3 [19104,5], near Boxley, Hamilton County, Indiana1,3.

Following his mother's death when he was only nine years old, Clavis lived for a time with his father, then later with some of his brothers.1

In 1929 Clavis entered Ball State Teachers College in Muncie, Indiana, earning a two-year teaching degree.  Later he returned for a four-year degree, and still later a master's degree from Butler University in Indianapolis.1

Clavis was shown in the 1930 census (Apr 25 1930), living in the household of brother Ross in Jackson Township, Hamilton County, Indiana:4

Hinshaw, Clavis, brother, age 20, born in Indiana; father born in North Carolina; mother born in Indiana; single; attended school.

On Feb 24 1942 Clavis J. Hinshaw, born 1910 in Indiana, enlisted in Chanute, Illinois as a private in the U.S. Army.  He declared he had four years of college, was single, without dependents, and occupied as a teacher.  He was recorded as 68" tall, 152 lbs.5

He married Sue Harvey1 [Mary Sue Harvey6], 19421, probably in Tyler, Smith County, Texas1.  Sue, daughter of Frank C. + Betty Nell Harvey, was born Sep 6 1920, Big Heart, Oklahoma.1,3,7

Although born Mary Sue, she was never called Mary, but was always known as Sue.6  She was a slender, pretty woman with brunette hair, a ready smile, and a good sense of humor.  She met Clavis when he was at an army training school at Tyler, Texas (Sue was working in Tyler as a secretary); they met in a bowling alley.1

During World War II Clavis was in the Signal Corps and took part in four invasions: Casablanca, Sicily, Anzio, and southern France.  After returning home, he served as a teacher and as a principal in schools at Cicero and at Tipton, Indiana.1,6

Sue died Sep 12 1973, Tipton, Tipton County, Indiana; buried Boxley Cemetery, Boxley, Hamilton County, Indiana.1,3  Medical: Sue died from cancer.1

In July, 2000 Clavis celebrated his 90th birthday in Tipton, Indiana.  His four children, eight of ten grandchildren and many friends and relatives attended.  He is in excellent health and lives alone with a pet crow.8

In 2002 Clavis moved to Macon, Georgia, to live with near his oldest son, Creede.  Clavis lived in an assisted living facility, rode his bike almost daily, and whiped all comers in checkers.9

Clavis Jewett Hinshaw died Apr 17 2005, in his home, Macon, Bibb County, Georgia; buried Boxley Cemetery, Boxley, Hamilton County, Indiana.3,10,11
