On Aug 24 1918 Ralph E. Whelchel, age 21, had registered for the World War I draft in Erie, Neosho County, Kansas. He had declared he was born July 4 1897 in Chanute, Kansas, and was then residing at 1309 S. Edith, Chanute where he was employed by W.R. Harrison of Chanute. He declared his nearest relative was his wife, Annie E. Whelchel of the same address. He was recorded as medium height, medium build, blue eyes, black hair.5
Vera and Ralph were apparently divorced or separated.
Vera was shown in the 1930 census (Apr 9 1930), living/staying (and probably working) in the household of a James D. & Cora Holt in Augusta, Butler County, Kansas:3

Son Lyle was shown in the 1930 census (May 1 1930), living with Vera's parents in Pleasant Township, Butler County, Kansas:7 Whelhel [sic], Lyle H., grandson, age 3 years ? [unclear] months, born in Kansas; father born in Iowa; mother born in Kansas.
Ralph was shown in the 1930 census (Apr 3 1930), apparently remarried, in Chanute, Neosho County, Kansas:6 Whelchel, Ralph L., head-of-household, age 31, born in Kansas; father born in Kansas; mother born in Iowa; first married at age 29; owned home ($2000 value); no radio in home; occupation: clerk, AT&SF office; not a war veteran.
Whelchel, Elsie, wife, age 28, born in Kansas; father born in Missouri; mother born in Illinois; first married at age 24.
She then married Orville Solze1 [Orville Salze2], Feb 20 19331.
