Born Jan 11 1795, Yadkin County, North Carolina.1,7,8  

He married Ruth Carter1,4,9 [Ruetha Carter10], Oct 9 18141,4,9 [Oct 15 18146], Surry County, North Carolina1,4,9.  Ruth, daughter of Isaac Carter & Mary "Polly" Bray, was born Dec 19 1792, Chatham County, North Carolina.1,6,7,8,10,11  Ruth had come to what is now Yadkin County with her parents in 1795.1  Ruth was the sister of Joseph Carter who married Benjamin's aunt Margaret Hinshaw.10,11,12  

A marriage bond was recorded for Benjamin Hinshaw, Jr. [sic] & Ruth Carter on Oct 9 1814, Surry County, North Carolina.  Benjamin Hinshaw (probably uncle Benjamin) signed as the recorded bondsman.13  

On August 26, 1837, Benjamin bought 174 acres of land in what is now Fall Creek Township, Yadkin County, perhaps half a mile west of what is now the Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church (where he and his parents are buried).1  

Benjamin and family, including his widowed mother, were shown in the 1850 census, South Division, Surry County, North Carolina, as follows:14

Benjamin Hinshaw, age 55, born in North Carolina; farmer; $500 real estate.
Ruth Hinshaw, age 57, born in North Carolina; cannot read or write.
Lucy Hinshaw, age 77, born in North Carolina; cannot read or write.
Hulda J. Hinshaw, age 22, born in North Carolina; cannot read or write.
Edward C. Hinshaw, age 20, born in North Carolina; attended school; farmer.
John T. Hinshaw, age 18, born in North Carolina; attended school; farmer.
Hugh B. Hinshaw, age 16, born in North Carolina; attended school; farmer.

Late in October 1860, Benjamin deeded his farm to his son John T. Hinshaw, with the provision that John would care for his parents for the rest of their lives.  Benjamin lived for only two more weeks.1  

Benjamin and family were again shown in the 1860 census (Jun 8 1860), Mt. Nebo, Yadkin County, North Carolina:15

Benjmn Hinshaw, age 65, born in North Carolina; farmer; $800 real estate; $400 personal property.
Ruth Hinshaw, age 67, born in North Carolina; cannot read or write.
John D Hinshaw, age 11, born in North Carolina; attended school.
Living next door in 1860 was son John Thomas Hinshaw.16  Also living nearby was daughter Mary Ann Hinshaw Fleming,17 and daughter Huldah Jane Hinshaw Angell.18  

Benjamin J. Hinshaw died Nov 6 1860, Yadkin County, North Carolina; buried Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, Fall Creek Township, Yadkin County, North Carolina.1,7,8  

Ruth survived Benjamin for two more decades, continuing her work as a local midwife, even making a trip to California to visit her sons.1  

Ruth died Mar 20 1882, Yadkin County, North Carolina; buried Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, Fall Creek Township, Yadkin County, North Carolina.1,6,7,8,10
