In 1908 the community of Greenleaf, Canyon County, Idaho, which was almost entirely a Quaker community, started a private school, Greenleaf Academy, headed by teacher Lorena Greenfield (who was paid $35 per month). Among the students in the first class of 1909 were Ezra Hinshaw and his brother H. Corwin Hinshaw.16 Many years later Ezra remembered when he had been janitor of the lower room of the school, building fires on mornings when the icy air nipped his fingers and froze his breath, for 10 cents a day.17
In the school year 1916-1917, the Greenleaf Academy baseball team was the outstanding team throughout the district, with Ezra Hinshaw the leading pitcher.18
On Sep 12 1918, Ezra Bushong Hinshaw, age 19, registered for the World War I draft in Caldwell, Canyon County, Idaho. He declared he was born April 4 1899, and he then resided in Greenleaf, Canyon County, Idaho where he was a farm laborer working for Milas C. Hinshaw. He declared his nearest relative was Mrs. Ida B. Hinshaw of Greenleaf. He was recorded as tall, medium build, blue eyes, dark brown hair.9 Ezra's father also registered on the same day.9 Being a Quaker, Ezra served as a conscientious objector in the Friends' Reconstruction, where he worked with Russian prisoners.19
On May 3 1919 Ezra B. Hinshaw was issued a U.S. passport. He declared he was born April 4th 1899 in Windsor, North Carolina, and his father, M. C. Hinshaw was born in Iowa and was then residing in Greenleaf, Idaho. Ezra declared he was then residing in Greenleaf, Idaho, occupied as a farmer. He declared he intended to depart, "Date Withheld", from the port of New York on board the "French Line, N.Y. to Bordeaux", intending to visit France and Great Britain for the purpose of "Friends Reconstruction Work". Where the pre-printed form stated "I do solemnly swear" Ezra lined-through "swear", replacing it with "affirm". He was recorded as age 20, 5' 11" tall, blue eyes, black hair, fair complexion, oblong face.13

Hinshaw Refuses To Resign Post By The Associated Press
Ezra B. Hinshaw, Republican National Committeeman from Idaho, Saturday said he does not intend to resign as long as he is a resident of Idaho.
A movement to force his resignation broke out in the open Friday when the Twin Falls County Republican Central Committee passed a resolution recommending that Hinshaw resign "in interest of party solidarity."
Hinshaw, now in California, told the Idaho Daily Statesman, "As long as I am a resident of Idaho I will continue the term of National Committeeman voted me by the unanimous voice of the Republican state convention a year ago in Idaho Falls.
"If and when I do change my residence, I will immediately resign from the office. This is the position I have always taken and will continue to take."
Hinshaw became general manager for two large department stores in Arcadia and Whittier, Calif., about two years ago but has retained his financial interest in a Boise furniture store. He still maintains his residence in Boise.
Hinshaw has been criticized by some Republican Party leaders for spending too much time in California and not attending to party affairs in Idaho.

Hinshaw Quits Idaho GOP Job BOISE (AP) -- Ezra Hinshaw resigned Wednesday as Republican national committeeman for Idaho because "business developments have made a change of residence necessary." Hinshaw is now in business at Whittier, Calif.
He disclosed his resignation in a letter to Republican National Chairman Leonard Hall, with a copy to GOP State Chairman William S. Campbell.
His resignation leaves the GOP with both a national committeeman and state chairman to be picked at the platform convention here Aug. 23.
Hinshaw was elected in 1952, having served as state chairman in the 1948 election.
He operated the Standard Furniture Co. here before moving to California to operate shopping centers at Whittier and Arcadia.
Ezra was also the namesake of two large department stores named "Hinshaw's", one in Arcadia and the other in Whittier, California. Although he has sometimes been called the founder of these stores,37,38 the store chain reportedly was actually founded by Texas investor Benjamin Clayton, who then lured Ezra away from his position as president of an Idaho department store chain to run the new stores in California. Part of the agreement was to name the stores Hinshaw's. Ezra never owned more than a third of the company.39,40,41,42 The first Hinshaw's location was on the southwest corner of Baldwin Avenue and Duarte in the Arcadia Hub shopping area of Arcadia, California. This store opened in 195239,40,41 (1951)38,43 and ultimately grew to contain 125,000 square feet (11,600 m2) of retail space. It was the main anchor of the Baldwin Avenue shopping strip, and the only large department store in Arcadia until a branch of The May Company opened several years later.43
In the mid-1950s, Hinshaw's opened a second branch, this in the new Whittier Quad Shopping Center in Whittier. Hinshaw's was one of two anchor stores in the quad, its complement being another branch of The May Company. The Whittier branch of Hinshaw's also had 125,000 square feet (11,600 m2) of space. Both branches had multi-level parking garages despite their suburban locations.43
The Whittier Quad shopping center was badly damaged by the Whittier Narrows earthquake of 1987, but Hinshaw's building suffered the least damage and remained open as the center's only tenant for several years. Sales were poor, and remained down even after the rest of the Quad was rebuilt, and the company announced the store's closure in December 1991. The company had been at that time the last surviving independent department store chain in Los Angeles County. Hinshaw's Arcadia location remained open for a number of years after that, prospering for a while but ultimately closing in the face of competition from the nearby Westfield Santa Anita shopping center, which underwent a major expansion in the 1990s.43,44,45
