He declared he was born Nov. 25 1895 in Grays Chapel, Tennessee, and was then residing in Swaim, Alabama where he was single, without dependents, and a farm laborer employed by E.V. Marris of Swaim. He was recorded as medium height, medium build, light blue eyes, light brown hair.6 During World War I Charley served as a Private in the U.S. Army.8
