Memories from daughter Joanie (Morris) Fisher:4

Mom idolized my Dad, and they shared almost 65 years of married life together.  My Dad was Mom's caregiver for the last 10 years of her life.  I owe Dad a debt of gratitude, along with the unselfish love and care provided by the Heartlite Hospice team.  Mom suffered the ravages of diabetes with strokes and a leg amputation.  Mom died at home with Dad and her loved ones beside her.

Mom liked to collect salt & pepper shakers, hen and rooster figurines, and rocks.  Mom was never one to sit and be idle.  She was either gardening and canning in the summer or reading and quilt-piecing in the winter.  Mom made so many beautiful quilts that she passed on to her family.  She loved to sit on her porch in her wheelchair and watch the birds (especially purple martins and bluebirds) and squirrels.  She loved buttermilk with cornbread and baked sweet potatoes.  She adored her St. Louis Cardinal's baseball team; especially Sammy Sosa and Mark McGuire.  She loved and adored little babies and was tender-hearted.  She loved honeysuckle in the Spring time and goldenrod in the Fall and the color blue.  She loved going to Crow Mountain Orchard, with my Dad, to buy their delicious peaches and apples.

Mom was a devoted wife and a loving Mother who worked hard her whole life to make a home for her family.  She grew up hauling her own water from a creek, washing clothes on a washboard, and ironing with a sad iron.  When Mom was 15, she sang in the "Henshaw Quartet" which consisted of her Daddy, her Uncle Oscar Henshaw and his daughter, Kathleen.  They would sing old-time gospel songs at various churches around the area.

She always kept us kids clean and said "we may not have the nicest or newest clothes, but we can be clean".  I never heard her complain or fuss once in all the years of cooking and cleaning she so diligently and unselfishly provided for her family.  She always put the needs of others before herself.  She is dearly missed by her loved ones.

A part of my heart was torn away when YOU left us. I love YOU, Ma!
