Born Aug 5 19221,5,6,7, Thornton, Boone County, Indiana1,5,6,7 [Mechanicsburg, Champaign County, Indiana8,9].  

On Oct 26 1942 Marvin E. Hinshaw, born 1922, Indiana, enlisted as a private in the U.S. military.10  Marvin entered the U.S. Army on Nov 16 19421 (enlisted Oct 26 1942, Indianapolis, Indiana).10  He graduated from radio school at Scott Field, Illinois, and from gunnery school at Ft. Myers, Florida.  A Technical Seargant, he served as a radio operator, photographer, mechanic, and gunner on the B-17 Flying Fortress and completed 24 missions over enemy territory.1  He was shot down over Romania and taken prisoner.1  On May 8 1944 Technical Sergeant Marvin E. Hinshaw, of the U.S. Army Air Corps serving the North African Theatre, was reported taken a prisoner of Germany.  On Sep 28 1944 he was reported liberated/repatriated.11  

After the war Marvin advanced from an engineer to plant supervisor to division supervisor with the General Telephone Co. of Indiana, until his retirement about 1987.1  

He married Betty Ann Powell, Aug 31 1946.1,12  Betty, daughter of Forrest Meyers Powell & Nancy Elizabeth Bush, was born Jun 3 1927, Springfield, Clark County, Ohio.1,12

Marvin and Betty were divorced in 1988.1  Betty died Jul 15 2009, Mary Rutan Hospital, Bellefontaine, Ohio; age 82.12  Betty's obituary was published in the "Fort Wayne News Sentinel" (Fort Wayne, Indiana) on July 22 2009:12

BETTY ANN POWELL HINSHAW, 82, of West Liberty, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine, Ohio.  Born on June 3, 1927, in Springfield, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Forrest Myers, Sr. and Nancy Elizabeth Bush Powell.  She married Marvin E. Hinshaw on Aug. 31, 1946.  Betty was a homemaker and also worked with the Council on Aging in Fort Wayne. was a 1945 graduate of DeGraff High and attended Calvary Baptist in Bellefontaine, Ohio.  Betty is survived by a son, David (Ruth) Hinshaw of Edgewater, Fla.; daughters, Carolyn Yvonne (James M.) Hinshaw-Davis of Pleasant Lake and Marlene Ann (Dan) Cooley of West Chester, Ohio; six grandchildren, Christopher, Brian and Bob Davis, Michelle Hinshaw, Sara (Chris) Schapman and Keith Cooley.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Forrest Myers Powell, Jr.; and a grandson, Timothy Andrew Davis.  A private Graveside service was held Friday, July 17, 2009, in Bellefontaine Cemetery, with Pastor Jeffory Willetts presiding.  Arrangements by Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine, Ohio.  Online condolences to the family at www.eichholtzfuneralhome.com

In 2010 Marvin was living in Clearwater, Florida.15

MARVIN E. HINSHAW

Funeral service for Marvin E. Hinshaw, age 90, of Edgewater, who died Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, Daytona Beach, will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 11 at Settle-Wilder Chapel, New Smyrna Beach.  Burial will follow at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, Edgewater.  Calling hours will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday, March 10 and 10:00-11:00 a.m. Monday, March 11 at the funeral home.  

Mr. Hinshaw was born in Mechanicsburg, Indiana, the second of six children to Glen and Edith Hinshaw.  At age 22, he served his country in World War II as a Technical Sergeant with the Army Air Force.  He was shot down over Polesti and taken prisoner for which he was awarded the Purple Heart.  After the war he was employed with General Telephone & Electronics as an engineer.  Upon retiring in 1983, Mr. Hinshaw moved to the Edgewater area.  Mr. Hinshaw attended Edgewater Christian Church and New Smyrna Church of Christ.  He was a member of American Legion Post 285 in Edgewater, the VFW, Masonic Lodge in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, East Florida Chapter of American POW Association, the Scottish Rite, and was a Shriner.  

Survivors include his wife, Eileen Bratcher Hinshaw; one son, David M. (Ruth); two daughters, Carolyn Davis (Mike), and Marlene Cooley; one sister, Virginia Cottongin; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three step-children, James Bratcher (Janet), Richard Bratcher, and David Bratcher (Cindy); seven step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.  Mr. Hinshaw was preceded in death by one grandson, Timothy Davis and four brothers, Bill, Harold, Howard, and Melvin.
