Edward became a Midshipman in the U.S. Navy, but resigned and studied law.1  

He married Sarah Edwards Tyler, Mar 8 1849, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.1,5  The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. Howland Coit of St. Stephens Church.1

On Oct 15 1862, Edward joined the regular army during the Civil War (what his wife Sarah Edwards Henshaw called "the war of the Rebellion").  He commanded an artillery company, named for him "Henshaw's Battery".8,9  After the siege of Knoxville, a forward move was being contemplated and five different generals applied to have Henshaw's Battery attached to their command.1  General Burnside recommended him for promotion on account of his "gallantry on many a well-fought field".  A comrade once said "I well remember the music of Henshaw's Battery at the Siege of Knoxville".  

Back at home in Ottawa, Illinois, Sarah helped to organize an aid society and served as its secretary.  She was made associate manager of the Chicago Sanitary Commission and was elected to write the history of its work, which she did, calling her book "Our Branch and its Tributaries".1,5  

After the war, Edward was commissioned in the regular army1 (24th U.S. Infantry).10

Edward Carrington Henshaw died Sep 14 18721,10,11 [Oct 16 18725], Fort McKavitt, Texas1,10,11; buried San Antonio National Cemetery, 517 Paso Hondo Street, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas1,10,11.  (Originally buried at Fort McKavill, Texas).11,12  

After Edward died, Sarah moved to California to be nearer to her brother's estate, and to be with son Edward who was there already.1
