Famous Hinshaws/Henshaws

U.S. Congressman Edmund Howard Hinshaw served as representative of the fourth Congressional district of the state of Nebraska in the 58th through 61st United States Congresses from 1903-1911. He was a Republican.

U.S. Congressman John Carl Williams Hinshaw served as a representative from the state of California in the 76th through 84th United States Congresses from 1939 until his death in 1956. He was a Republican.

U.S. Congressman Andrew Jackson Hinshaw served as a representative from Mission Viejo, California in the 93rd and 94th United States Congresses. He is currently the president of a graphics firm in Maryland.

Edmund Lee Henshaw, Jr., (1925-1995) of the Commonwealth of Virginia, was unanimously elected Clerk of the United States House of Representatives, 94th Congress (H.Res. 936, 12/17/1975). He was again elected Clerk of the 96th Congress (H.Res. 2, H.Res. 4, 1/15/1979), and of the 97th Congress (H.Res. 2, H.Res. 4, 1/5/1981).

David Henshaw (1791-1852) was U.S. Secretary of the Navy, 1843-44, under President John Tyler.

John L. Henshaw is currently (2003) Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health and head of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

George Hinshaw (1775-1862) was elected in 1836 to the Illinois House of Representatives, Tenth General Assembly, as a representative from McLean County.

Edward Carter Hinshaw (1830-1906) served several terms in the California state legislature.

Isaiah M. Hinshaw (1866-1943) served two terms in the Missouri state legislature.

Dean Blaine Hinshaw (1941-1991) served three terms in the Kansas state legislature.

Lewellyn Magellan Hinshaw (1875-1957) served two years in the Kansas state legislature.

Joseph Calvin Hinshaw (1886-1977) served in the Kansas state legislature in 1939.

Randy Hinshaw (1960-) currently serves the 21st district in the Alabama House of Representatives.

Jerry Hinshaw (1917-) served at least three terms in the Arkansas state legislature.

James Ernest Henshaw (1932-) served fourteen years in the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

Alex Henshaw (1917-) earned a world-wide reputation as a successful air racing and record breaking pilot in the 1930s, and in 1938 won the King's Cup race. His most famous flight was from England to Capetown and back in the same Mew Gull in 1939, setting a record which is still unbroken. During WWII he was chief production test pilot at Vickers' Castle Bromwich factory, flight testing hundreds of Spitfire and Lancaster aircraft.

William Wade Hinshaw (1867-1947) was an accomplished opera singer. He was also a renowned genealogist and the author of The Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, the preeminent work on Quaker genealogy.

Annette Hanshaw was a well-known and very popular radio and recording singer in the late 1920s and 1930s. Her recordings are collector's items today and she still has many fans.

Susan Ellen Hinshaw is also a very accomplished and well known opera singer, having performed all over Europe, South America, Australia, and the United States, including Carnegie Hall.

Creede Hinshaw currently (1999) writes a weekly religion column for the Albany Herald, and monthly and bi-weekly religion columns for the Macon Telegraph and the Wesleyan Christian Advocate respectively.

Siblings Chris Hinshaw and Jennifer Hinshaw both became accomplished and renowned Triathletes.

Lydia Hinshaw is a sports columnist with the Daytona Beach Fl. News-Journal.

Hinshaw/Henshaw Landmarks

The town of Henshaw in Union County, Kentucky was named after pioneer settler George Henshaw, who moved to Kentucky in 1819 and settled near Geiger Lake, where he was one of the first settlers in Union County.

Lake Henshaw, San Diego County, California, was created by the San Diego Water Company which was founded by William Griffith Henshaw. See: photo 1 and photo 2.

Henshaw, Greene County, Tennessee, a historical town and now-discontinued post office near Chucky and Greeneville.

Hinshaw Street, Bloomington, Illinois. Named after Illinois legislator George Hinshaw who was an early pioneer in McLean County, Ill. George's son, George Hinshaw, Jr. was instrumental in the early street layout of Bloomington and as a result he named one street after his father. There is also a Hinshaw Street in Glasgow, Scotland.

Hinshaw Street, Arnolds Park, Dickinson County, Iowa (see: Jacob Hinshaw, who settled with his family in Arnolds Park). Arnolds Park, Iowa is also home to a Hinshaw Bridge.

Hinshaw Cemetery, near Danvers, McLean County, Illinois. Located on the family farm originally settled by Simon Hinshaw, who was an early pioneer in McLean County, Ill. Numerous non-Hinshaws are buried here, so this may have originally been an early McLean County Quaker cemetery. A survey of this cemetery is available from the McLean County Genealogical Society.

Hinshaw Hall, a dormitory on the campus of the University of North Carolina (Greensboro), was named after George Washington Hinshaw due to land he donated to the university and other land he had donated to schools in Winston, N.C.
