Edward A. Hinshaw
May 5, 1937 - March 21, 2016
Resident of Saratoga

Edward A. Hinshaw, a Santa Clara County trial lawyer specializing in the defense of physicians in medical negligence cases, died on March 21, 2016, at Stanford Hospital.  He was 78 years old.  Mr. Hinshaw suffered a ruptured aneurysm on February 9, 2016, during his annual family vacation to the Big Island, Hawaii.  His wife of fifty-seven years, Barbara, and children and grandchildren provided great company and comfort in his final weeks.

Mr. Hinshaw began his legal career in San Jose in 1965 with Campbell, Custer, Warburton and Britton, and thereafter practiced for nearly two decades with Rankin Oneal.  In 1985, he founded his own law firm, known today as Hinshaw, Marsh, Still & Hinshaw, LLP.  His career was devoted to the representation of physicians and hospitals.  He was lauded for his unwavering commitment to his clients, keen knowledge of the law and medicine, and his courtroom advocacy and skills as a trial lawyer.  In 1975, Mr. Hinshaw spent time in Sacramento advocating on behalf of physicians in the development of the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act legislation.  Mr. Hinshaw was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.  During his career, he served as a consultant to the California Medical Association.  In 2006, he was awarded the Citizen's Award by the Santa Clara County Medical Association in recognition of his significant contributions in the health field.

Mr. Hinshaw was born on May 5, 1937, in Vacaville, California to Chester and Gertrude Hinshaw.  He received his undergraduate degree from the College of Pacific (now University of Pacific) in 1959, and, thereafter, served in the United States Army.  Mr. Hinshaw received his law degree from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1963.

Mr. Hinshaw was an avid sportsman, accomplished athlete and fierce competitor.  He was an expert fly-fisherman and loved bird hunting with his regal labrador retriever, Bullah.  He was a collegiate All-American swimmer and water polo player, champion open-water swimmer, and held numerous world masters swimming records while competing for the Olympic Club in the 1970's and 80's.  He was a three-time age-group podium finisher of the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon (1984-1986).  He shared his passion for aquatic sports, bicycling, the outdoors, golf, sand dabs, shopping at the farmer's market on Saturday mornings, blackjack, body surfing, and Sharks hockey with his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Hinshaw was incredibly generous and people were drawn to his intelligence, strength and loyalty.  He cared deeply for his large extended family, and was steadfast in his support.  A true patriarch, he led by example and instilled family values by establishing wonderful family traditions.  He took great pleasure in taking his family on vacation, especially to the Big Island and Las Vegas.  He is survived by his wife, Barbara Hinshaw, four children, Jennifer Still, Chris Hinshaw, Brad Hinshaw, and Cynthia Werts, and ten grandchildren.  He is also survived by his brother Chester J. Hinshaw (Dallas), and sisters Diana J. Hinshaw (Fresno) and F. Lorraine Erickson (Chico).

The family will be having a private memorial service.  Notes of condolence can be sent to Barbara Hinshaw, c/o the Hinshaw Law Firm, 12901 Saratoga Ave., Saratoga, CA, 95070.
